Happy Sunday....hopefully with only things you want to
do happening.
I'm not doing laundry but wanted you to see our version...dad, the 99 cent store plunger worked well, however, I look forward to doing a real laundry at our first stop.
So, we have several entries in the Guess the date/time of Arrival at 00.00. We'll send out the msg as soon as we cross after joining King Neptune with a sip of champagne.
Picked up a nice wind today....we're beating into wind at 5k with reefed main, jib and staysail. We have entered the convergence zone...Seas are confused ( several directions at once ) due to air mass rotation in no. hemisphere counterclockwise & clockwise in so. hemisphere.
Comfortable to enjoy but not if preparing a meal. Sure wish my bread came out yesterday. It looked suitable for a blue ribbon at the fair but unfortunately not done inside. Planned on using it for Italian, peppers, onion sandwiches. At this pace it may be cereal or soup. Or if it calms down, I'll try again.
Paul just pit on some tunes....so I'm signing off to enjoy. Love, Leslie

Day 18, beat out another squall...
Hello,
Temperatures/humidity are rising....and I'm wishing my bread would rise, too. Dad, this the first all those bread mixes ...sure hope it will be tasty as I am expecting. Not sure about adding oven heat to an already hot house and we're not even at the equator yet.
Speaking of oven and equator,
Susan how is your new Wolfe oven?
Who is already preparing to enter the Name the Date/Time we'll be getting to the Equator? One entry already in.
The squall in today's photo was what I woke up to for my watch this morning.....Paul was setting up a run to beat it and we did.
So far, my vote for best food on the trip was the ice cream dad insisted I stow deep in the frig. for Paul. We ate the whole quart....wish I had some now.
Timer went off...got to check the bread. Love Leslie

Update from Paul - Day 18
I spoke with Paul this morning and things have finally calmed down. He says the squalls have passed and that it is really lovely sailing right now. They do not expect any more extreme conditions for the rest of the trip.
He says the rudder problem is under control and is not serious as long as the conditions remain moderate. His solar panels are keeping up with their energy usage so all is good. Their refrigerator may be slowing down, however, so he says Leslie is encouraging them to eat a lot of meat soon. In between steak dinners, they are finally getting some much-needed rest.
He and Leslie send love to you all and thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. Their xgate email address is rocinante@satxgate.com

Join the Fun....when will Grangers Cross the Equator
Just when will Rocinante cross the Equator with Paul & Leslie maturing from pollywogs to shell backs.
Hailing all friends and family to test your skill and/or luck in naming the date/time Rocinante will cross the Equator. If you're unfamiliar with the tradition, just ask a veteran who (like my dad) experienced the pomp & circumstance or they would probably call it an initiation varying from "just for fun" to a incredibly challenging/disgusting ritual.
All the data can be found on our blog so you can calculate this or just make a wild guess.
Expected to cross the Equator at 134.23 W
Entries must be received via XGate email (rocinante@satxgate.com)
Sunday morning at 9:00 (Pacific Daylight Time)
Grand Prize: Bottle of Champagne (as used to appease King Neptune) if under 21 a suitable substitute will be given.
Creative Prize to all who participate.
Feel free to share this with others. The more the merrier!
Good Luck. Love , Leslie

Time for Hydrovane ....
6-8 kn winds reasonable seas, no reefs and making 4k SOG it must be time for Hydrovane to take its turn. Need to give our rudder problem a break so we thought we'd give it a try. So far, so good! It's so quiet! Did you see we are creeping through the 0s?? Should be crossing on Sunday. Hey dad you get our latest lat/long from the gang to find us on your chart? Need to get back to monitoring Hydro....Have a wonderful weekend, Everyone! Love Leslie

With squalls come rainbows....
Good Morning! We're getting to be pros at fleeing or hanging on during squalls. One more approaching so I thought I'd get this out.
Rocinante needs some serious clean up ....hopefully this afternoon. I'm still thinking a French croissant as my first stop but a wash & fold is creeping up there.
Still haven't seen a boat of any kind. Paul saw a beautiful tuna jumping and rainbow.
Since the squalls, cereal, cup of soup and crackers are a mainstay. I'm hoping there is still an egg burrito in the there. For me today. Paul does enjoy those retro snacks ( Hostess cupcakes, Amos cookies, m & m cookies( only only because he's out of Linda & Teri's homemade cookies.). I miss my tea..it doesn't seem to taste good here. ( imagine that dad..a day without tea)
Wonder about the headlines from time to time....but I must admit I don't miss it. Hoping for the best ....
Still no email coming in so you can use texting our Iridium number. Miss you all...hard not being able to hear your thoughtful, loving voices.
I'll send a couple of photos... Love Leslie

Day 15
Hello Everyone! Where did the day go?
Actually, last night just before dinner we got to experience our first squall. Such a small little word that packs a lot of action. 30 kn wind, 6-9 seas, pelting rain with air temp 80s. Since then we have been running from them with a double reefed main, 20% jib. The USCG advised us to head for the Equator ....hmmmm actually that is where we're trying to go. Everywhere we look the darkened sky to promises a wet, rocky ride.
Remember how camping in the summer could start off so fun...everything in its place....life of leisure then he rain comes and suddenly everything is wet. With the humidity and continued squalls, we are wearing wet foul weather gear and life jackets -, uck. I guess a few more days of this. Paul is looking up some alternate routes.
Despite the extreme conditions , the rudder has not further deteriorated. We have a method to keep it going but it takes constant monitoring. ( dad we tried some super glue-very helpful .)
Thinking of those of you that track our position and speed...I'm sure the last 24 hrs seems puzzling .
Speaking of squalls, Paul just started the engine when an unexpected wind hit.....got to go. Love Leslie

Email out but none in...,
Hi, just finished a frozen pasta/shrimp/veggies entre by Bertoli. Very tasty....
Weather currently 83, wind 15, speed 7, 3-6' waves and attitudes are good. Rocinante has been sprinting all day ....like being in a race.
Noticed today that while I can send out emails, but that inbound emails are not getting delivered. A big file was sent related to the rudder problem & that overfilled the capacity. So, that should get fixed Monday. In the meantime, we are getting texts so you can do that instead.
Some laundry got done, and we straightened out some mislaid clutter. Using handholds is a must.
Our "social hour" is about up & we'll need to start naps before the long night begins.
Just getting back to finish this post...we had steering project to work on before it got dark. Now it's really time for my nap.
Hope you're all having a nice weekend. Dad, we're still enjoying the ham. And, the ice cream was the best! Love Leslie

Day 11....Missing Wingman
Hi Everyone, Sun is up behind some clouds, wind 9-15,& and swelly seas. Looking forward to a shower once the solar shower bag heats up again. Yea!
Think I'll make some muffins Time to do a wash and consider making a real dinner. Sue, do you remember those dish ( flour sacks) towels we embroidered with the days is the week & a chore assigned to each day?? As I was thinking about doing the wash, I remember the clothesline on the towel and at San Anselmo Dr. Rocinante will be looking a bit like a clothesline later today.
Paul will be exploring more options for rudder repair. He emptied everything (eek)out of the S-lazaret & climbed under the helm seat to check out a lead but that wasn't the problem.
I had my Padre shirt on yesterday. Dad, how are they doing? I'll call tomorrow and get a report
Have a wonderful weekend! Love, Leslie

Update from Leslie - Wednesday, April 19
We've been surfing big seas /winds since last night. As Paul says...not what he signed up for. Good news is that we're headed south on our rhumbline, but it's difficult to do anything other than hang on.
"Oh what a night" ..... That song keeps coming to mind. Trying to get some naps in today. Bucket laundry was on the list of things to do today, but that's been axed. Too hard to text right now.

Hitchhiker on board
This morning in the calm, we had a wing-man join us for a while -- a beautiful sea bird that perched and went to sleep on the bowsprit. It was remarkable that no matter how chaotic the jib got it hung on.

Day 6, A beautiful sunny day but no wind
A picture perfect day except no wind....if you were flying overhead & saw us, you'd be wondering why Rocinante is bobbing up & down as evidenced by no wake. Not that we're complaining but each night we hear on PPJ others crossing the equator. Good thing we made good progress the first 4 days.
A little about our daily meals....
Breakfast-juice, cereal, fruit fresh now but will be dried only soon. Tried a breakfast burrito (Costco) tasty, P had oatmeal. Dinners so far, ham sandwiches (dad's yummy baked ham); scrambled eggs w/ veggies (eggs contributed by Laura Ann & Geoff-fresh from the Hen no refrigeration; required); seasoned rice enhanced w/ dad's freshly sauteed carrots & canned chicken; PFChang veggies beef stir fry added seasoned rice; leftovers preceded by a fav-avocado, shrimp salad. Desserts-our favorite homemade cookies from Linda & Teri. Beverages-water, Squirt, Pepsi & milk...saving the champagne to share w/ King Neptune at 0
Hope this isn't too long to send. FYI postings come via email if you've signed up( easy to do) best viewed on Blog. Email takes 1/2 day, Blog immediately. On Blog you'll see current lat/long & speed. Love, Leslie

Update from Leslie - Monday morning, April 17
I think my sea legs finally have kicked in. With the lighter wind yesterday, we had a break. Sunny all day yesterday. The nights are cold though. Sure miss the full moon....so dark tonight except for star studded sky. Wind right now 5-7 knots, SOG (Speed Over Ground) is 4.7 knots, definitely off our rhumbline.
Sometimes when looking out across this huge gorgeous blue (a navy blue) ocean, I can't believe this is where we are. It's enjoyable & comfortable but those times can be quickly interrupted with a need to work on the bow or other instances that could lead to an accident....can't get complacent that's for sure. Leslie

Update from Paul - April 16 - Day 5
First three days of the trip were the most fun sailing I have ever had. Lots of wind and big close seas, 15-20 kts + winds and 3-6/9 ft seas. Rocinante and autohelm 3000 did perfectly. Saw lots of 7 kt speed and made an 8.4 going down a front side. Was going to put up the Hydrovane (windvane self-steerer) today but the winds went full calm. I don't think we did 7 miles total all day. Sails flapping now on lake Pacific (The forecast on PredictWind was 10-15 kts). There's plenty of time left. Water is gorgeous but still cold. Leslie is about to serve shrimp on the veranda ......
P.S. Tried to fly spinnaker today. Not enough wind but good practice. Two days ago I was doing 7.3 on reefed main only! PG

Dancing dolphins at sunset again
Good Morning! Rocinante bucked like we never could have imagined & performed well. Took down the jib last night and reefed the main this morning. Foul weather gear is the style of the day...trip?
Yummy food aboard but who can eat... G& L, we cooked scrambled eggs....they were tasty until I lost them.
Slept more than P...he's napping now. Thought we were out of shipping lane but last night I thought we were going to be a "tanker sandwich".
Wind at 18, speed 5.8 w/out jib and only a reefed main. A more comfortable ride...yeah! Love, L&P

Update from Paul - Day 1 Report
Finally gone. Great sail yesterday. Quartering wind and seas. Winds 15 to 25 knots. Saw speed of 6.5-7.4 knots most of day. Furled the jib at sunset as the wind moved aft. Still maintained 6 plus knots most of the night but it got very rolly. Trying to download GRIB (weather) file for today. Winds are down to 15 knots on the beam as well as waves. Only 3-5 feet but short intervals. It's starting to drizzle and OAT (Outside Air Temperature) is 64 degrees.

Thank you dear family & friends....
Before Leslie and I depart on this adventure we'd like to recognize all this people that helped get Rocinante ready for the departure:
Joe of Viking Marine for getting the engine and transmission up and running
Fritz of Pacific Offshore Rigging for standing and running rigging and stories of his sailing adventures and expert advice.
Dan of Dan Fab for the excellent fabrication of the solar panel structure as well as designing the bend in the radar pole so our Hydrovane self steering would clear!
Lorraine Wilson for the perfect bimini cover and fun discussions of life on Shelter Island
Shea Weston of Offshore Outfitters for last minute heroics in the tweaking of our SSB and installing sailmail on our ancient PC computer.
Thank you to our good friend Steve Mushovic for his endless ideas and expert help in resuscitating a very tired electrical system while also incorporating solar panels. To Geoff, our good friend, dock mate and Beer can captain aboard Second Wind, for the encouragement, great ideas, free use of his tools, and help over the past year including final installation of the hydrovane system with Steve and I. Thank you to Geoff's wife Laura Ann for the farm fresh eggs that will last two weeks or more without refrigeration and the soon to be devoured almost ripe pears. Bill Barsz for the use of tools and fabrication of parts that we could not make. To Jeri Barsz for the ingredients to make sprouts in a mason jar for greens while under way! Our personal seamstress and great friend Carolyn Carswell for fabrication of our winch cover and designing mattress covers for the port and starboard lee berths.
A big thank you to Sue Travis who flew down from Seattle to help us with provisions and organization of goods. To Walt Travis, Leslie's dad, for his encouragement and suggestions on food preparations, shopping expertise, storage and a cooked five pound ham that we will be eating for at least the first week of our journey. To my sister Chris for the fun gift pack and adding our 3rd mate chaperone Pepe. You will see more of Pepe on the blog. My little sister Pat for the jars of fresh honey from her farm as well as adding to our first aid kit. To Linda our good friend and neighbor for watching our house and making my favorite cookies to eat with the above mentioned ham. Thanks to our next door neighbors Doug and Terri for house watching, special departure cookies and volunteering to drive us to our boat on departure day. All our "C" dock family for the fun going away party. A special thanks to all of you for giving us your encouragement and good wishes for a safe journey. Special note to my poker family, don't sell my seat, I'll be back!

Sea trial....
Today, we actually tossed the dock lines and headed out on a sea trial testing all systems and our sea legs. Had a wonderful sail out the channel then over to Mariner's Cove. We'll be testing the Hydrovane when we sail back tomorrow. While many necessities are in place, each of our To Do Lists are getting additions. Looking forward to another wonderful sail tomorrow then back to work finalizing boat & house preps. Stay tuned for departure date later this week....
